So for the back end of 09 and following on into 2010 (TWENTY-TEN!) I've been on a bit of a grime tip. Regularly tuning in to the Boy Better Know show on Rinse generally keeps you updated with it, and the guys have always got some banter going on to keep you entertained in between (generally about how shit the other one's are on Pro Evo/Street Fighter). Real wind-down feel to it, surprising from the producer who smashed out ridiculously bouncy dubstep tunes last year, e.g. Kick Snare and Up & Down, Crissy Criss. You might know I'm not really keen on drum n bass, so it takes some next level stuff to impress me, and this is. The guy's doing pretty well for himself now, and recently got his own show on 1Xtra, every Thursday morning 1am - 5am, so show some love and listen in if you got the time.

Probably my stand-out track from the recent Jack Beats Mishka Mix, Supafly by 15yr old rapper Fugative, has finally dropped. Head over to The Fat! Club to grab the full length A1 Bassline remix. Shank takes a much more minimal vibe on this one and sacrifices the squelch in place of some house rhythms, but by no means is this is a bad thing. If you were lucky enough to be in London last night and got to hit Chew The Fat's January Sale, I'm incredibly jealous. Now go here.

Instead of doing a mammoth (belated) 'best of' post for the year, I thought I'd offer out some alternatives to what's been getting churned out of the rest of the 'sphere at this time. FTD are giving you 10 BIG productions you might've missed in 2009 for whatever reason(s) (drug abuse/lack of sight/thinking about how much of a gimp Noel Edmonds is - yeah, you could spend a whole year doing that). These are in no order at all by the way, just 10 sick productions that you might've missed or maybe never got released.

10. 16bit - The Tale of the Exploding Fist - October 2009, Southside Dubstars

16bit have been all over it this year. MASSIVE releases played out by everyone and anyone, the guys know how to get you skanking. This release was a bit overshadowed by the likes of Swine Flu, Chainsaw Calligraphy and In the Death Car. Beware, this one's a seriously dark one from 16bit.

9. FuntCase - Make Our Day - August 2009, 420 Records

FuntCase is someone you're gonna be hearing shit loads about in 2010. He's been getting some love in the back end of this year, and will definitely be hammering at a club near you soon.

8. Proxy - Dancing in the Dark (OlliE! & Bare Noize VIP) - Unreleased

This one surfaced around October/November time and got a little love on the web, circling round as an unknown remix at first. The Russian gets his electro/techno spun at 140 with an ever meatier bass.

7. Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek (Roksonix Remix) - Unreleased

One of the better Imogen Heap rmx's I've heard. This one's got much more urgency about it than the Enigma one from earlier in '09. Roksonix are pretty fresh to the scene and only formed late this year, this being one of their first productions. Expect some more nasty basslines from them in 2010!

6. Foreign Beggars - Seven Figure Swagger (Bar9 Remix) - November, Dented Records

If you've managed to get through 2009 not having heard any Bar9, this is the one you need to be inrouduced on.

5. Felix Da Housecat - Kickdrum (Propa Tingz' Nasty Gal Remix) - Unreleased

It really is a big fat fucking kickdrum. Propa Tingz shook some ground this year, big releases (check Rippin Needles and their Chainsaw Caligraphy rmx) played out by some big names, played out by the likes of Switch & Rusko!

4. Four Tet - Love Cry (Joy Orbison Remix) - November, Domino

Quite little chance you missed this one, but maybe you couldn't get hold of it 'til now. Glitchy, 2-step riddim.

3. La Roux - I'm Not Your Toy (Nero Remix) - October, Polydor

You might've missed this one down to the mass hype around the Jack Beats rmx (top track of 2009?) but Nero took a good swing at it aswell. Much darker take on it than the Jack Beats mix.

2. Mistabishi - Printer Jam (Barbarix Remix) - July, Hospital Records

Who knew printer's could get so filthy?

1. DZ - My Moon, My Dub [ Feist - My Moon, My Man (Remix) ] - Unreleased

Much more rhythmic than most other DZ stuff, this one's not all about the bass (but it helps!). Feist's voice turns this one into a must have, and the breakdown about 3 minutes in blows my mind.

Some you'll know others you probably won't...,it was all relatively mainstream as underground music goes but all very good!

If you listen to the radio you'll most probably have heard that Wiley and Chew Fu song. I don't know what it's called.. I heard it the other day and i knew I'd heard it somewhere before.. I realised it's the 'Chew Fu Fix' of 'New York New York' by Frank Sinatra but with some Londoner 'rapping' over the top of it (and without the Frank Sinatra bits..). Well the original's here for the taking and much much better than Wiley.

Last of the Time Warp songs for today is from two massive artists.. Pretty much the biggest and best fidget (and Dubstep) DJ/producers there are to be honest.. Another song that changed how I see music.. It pretty much introduced me to all things wobbly.. I mean, the Hostage remix of The Streets was some pretty wobbly bass, but this is some seriously wobbly bass! (I'm bored of the word wobbly, can we change it?!) This song is like a classic of it's genre, and probably will be for a very long time!

Apologies to those of you who keep up to date with what we post.. It's been a while, to say the least! It seems everything has slowed down a lot over the Christmas season.. I've noticed a few other blogs haven't posted much recently.. Still, that gives us here at FTD no excuse. We made you a promise, to supply you with, and i quote "regular doses of bass". When Tel Aviv's Asaf Borger isn't drumming for death metal band Shabira he's making some heavy, heavy dubstep. I'm pretty excited about these two tracks at the moment in particular Guided Relaxation Dub, which is one of the best tracks I've heard in ages and as usual it is made perfectly clear that Britney Spears sounds far better remixed.

When somebody remixes what is already a really good track it can either ruin it completely or add something entirely new to it. I honestly don't think I've been this excited about posting a song in the entire history of FTD. DZ's paired up with a little known dubstep producer, NTRLD (Brapdem Recordings/Double Drop Records) from San Francisco, for this one. A load of DZ shit's hit the fan recently but this is the only one you really NEED. It's bass like this that keeps me makes me forget other music genres exist. Credit to Major Lazer for the original too, get that entire album, you've probs been told enough times but it's something special. I've thrown in another dubstep take on In For the Kill. Yeah I know that song's 'so last year', but they were giving away for free on their Facebook page and it's a pretty solid effort, even if it is the same style as Skream's. Tek-Step have released on Double Drop Records too.

Apparently I have too much shit on my hard-drive and there was only 470MB free or something.. I've been looking for an excuse to use this picture for ages. Chris set it as my desktop a while ago and i just never took it off. It's still on now.. (You'll understand the relevance soon)
Excision is fast becoming one of my favorite producers. If you hadn't noticed already, I love pretty much anything that's got a ridiculous bassline. And Excision gives us just that. I think I've put one of his songs in a post before (Calypso?) but never really said anymore of it.. I heard some more stuff by him recently and fuck me.. It's heavy!
I've put them in my mix (which will be on here later tonight, stay peeled!) but i thought i'd let you a head start.

First up a producer called Akira Kiteshi (aka Tommy Forrest), who's got probably the most deceptive name in the game (he's actually from Edinburgh !). His tracks have been floating about the past year, with play on Mary Anne Hobbs' and N-Type rinsing the Pinball EP. The guy's all about powerful kick drums and basslines that rip you in two. Make sure you check Boom n Pow aswell the track given below.

Although this is really annoying Liddell has done a great job of holding the fort, while I haven't been able to post. Cookie Monsta is making a real name for himself in the dubstep scene. He's producing none-stop and it's all proper good quality stuff. He's got a new mix which i was listening to yesterday in awe.. It's really something else. I dunno if i can post it but I'll find out and see what i can do.
Anyway, I heard this song a while ago in Jakwob's "Wobcast" mix and i loved it. I think it's one of those songs where you need a specific taste in filthy music to enjoy. It really is enough to make you feel a bit light-headed and queezy.
It's also a nice fat 320k so turn it up extra loud..!

I never saw this coming when I saw this track appear, if you haven't heard of them The xx (formerly Xerox Teens) are 4 kids from South London who make seriously beautiful music. They went to school with Burial, and have worked with Diplo ! With no drummer (just a drum-machine) they explore all kinds of genres alongside singer-guitarist Romy's indie-princess voice. In places it all kind of comes together like minimal dubstep, but this remix gives a more 2-step feel. They play The Cockpit in Leeds on my birthday - win.

High Rankin's been kicking up a fuss with some seriously heavy dubstep recently. Two of his tracks have been used on Herve's Cheap Thrills Volume 1 (which, apart from the Rankin' tracks, [Fake Blood's] Fix Your Accent & [Speaker Junk's] Outside, is a bit of a disappointment) and Leeds' heads can see him at Bigger Than Barry on the 24th November. This track's taken from the No Money For Guns EP (out on Cheaper Thrills) and can't be described as anything other than HEAVY.

Since a few of us were in Newcastle over the weekend, and Andy George & Jaymo partied at the friends' house we stayed at a couple of nights before, I figure this song's appropriate after a week of no posts ! The first production I've heard from the two as a pair combines George's bouncy bass with Jaymo's more electro lean. If you dint already know, the two have got a regular slot on Radio One now every first Thursday of the month from 9pm - 10pm.

I did some research and I've come up with the result that this track's a cover of Britney Spears' Toxic by a collab of Buju Banton (a dancehall/reggae musician, homophobe & cannabis cultivator) and Yael Naim (a French/Israeli singer/songwriter, you might know her song, New Soul, from the Macbook Air ads) [*stop for breath] then it's remixed by 16bit, big news. Just download it and check it for yourself anyway. Came out in 2008 on Sequence Recordings.

Two&Fro (Luke Elliott & Alex Cornforth) are really beginning to make a name for themselves on the Newcastle scene with sets coming up at the O2 Academy, a residency spot at Sea and regular work across the country on behalf of Red Bull. It's not undeserving either, and aside from the fact they're two of my best friends, these guys are providing some of the most innovative and exciting fidget sets that i've seen in a while. Where as most up and coming dj's of our generation are still learning to beatmatch and drop a fat bassline these guys are years ahead of the competition taking their time to edit songs and samples on ableton to guarantee that their set is original and inspiring. As they gain more exposure and get more experience under their belts these guys are definitely two to watch out for in the future.

I've never heard of Sharooz before but he seems to be doing pretty well for himself with both 2 Many DJ's and Moby dropping this track. To accompany that fact that Miles Dyson has done a remix of the song means that Sharooz should be gaining some good publicity.

I don't usually like this kind of electro as it can get a little bit repetitive but this track has an amazing drop into one of the dirties basslines i've heard in a while. Seriously, I had to take a shower after hearing this.

So, as usual I haven't posted anything on here for a while as I've been busy travelling and enjoying the festival season. However, this doesn't mean that I haven't had anything to post and there's a lot of new music that I want to put on here so in return for not posting for a while I've put together a few songs from artists who I've really been into over the past few weeks. If you've enjoyed everything put on the blog so far, your probably not going to enjoy this post.
